Help listening to our programmes

Our programmes are distributed in two different formats. You should choose the format you use depending on your requirements and on the speed of internet connection and the equipment and programmes you have available.

MP3 downloads

Our programmes are available for you to download, for your own personal use only, in high quality MP3 format (192kbps stereo). Many of the files available are quite large and will take a considerable time to download if you have a slow (e.g. dial-up) connection. They are suitable for playing on a computer with a sound card or a portable MP3 player (such as an Apple Ipod or MP3-compatible mobile phone), or for burning to CD (for your own personal use only).

Most modern PC or Apple Mac computers with sound cards will come with suitable software already installed for playing MP3 files.

Where programmes consist of more than one downloaded file, you should try to listen to the files in increasing numerical order, to make best sense of the programme material.

Some software may attempt to play the files whilst they are being downloaded. On slow (dial-up) connections this may result in an intermittent playback (i.e. with long pauses between short segments of sound). If this happens, we suggest that you download the files before playing them (typically this can be done by CTRL clicking or CMD clicking the link to the file - pressing the CTRL or CMD key before clicking with the mouse - and then double clicking the downloaded file(s) for playback when the downloads have completed.)

Streaming Real Audio (not currently available)

We also stream our programmes in a Real Audio format suitable for listening directly over a dial-up connection. The format used is not high quality, but allows you to listen to an entire programme without downloading it first.

To listen, you must have a suitable player installed on your computer or handheld device. It is not necessary to pay for any software - the Free RealPlayer is available for free at www.real.com

We recommend that you choose the free player, and not a trial version of commercial software. We also recommend that when installing software downloaded via the link above, you install the minimum version (without any bundled extras) and that you ask the installation software not to use the player as the default application for any other types of file.

If you want to listen to a particular section or track from the streamed programme, you must select this from within RealPlayer.
